Which Welsh councils charge the Visitor Levy?

Each council in Wales decides for itself whether to charge the Visitor Levy. So far, Cardiff is the only one: it charges the levy on stays from 1 April 2027.

Where each council stands

The WRA's list of councils charging the levy or consulting on it shows Cardiff charging, and no councils consulting.

Wherever you are in Wales, you still need to register your accommodation by 31 March 2027.

How a council brings in the levy

A council can only introduce the levy after consulting residents and local businesses. If it goes ahead, it must set up a Visitor Levy Partnership Forum with local tourism organisations, and publish a notice. Bookings made before six months after the notice is published don't include the levy, so providers get time to prepare.

We add councils to StayTally as soon as they confirm a levy.
